Taking your pup on a camping trip can be a great way to bond and explore nature together. But planning a dog-friendly adventure can be tricky—you have to consider what kind of terrain you’ll be navigating, what kind of amenities you’ll need, and more.

The good news is that you can plan the perfect dog-friendly adventure with a little bit of preparation.

Let's take a look at how to get started.

Choose Your Destination Carefully

When choosing a destination for your camping trip, it’s important to consider your pup’s needs as well as your own. For example, some dogs may not do well in extreme temperatures; in this case, you'll want to choose a destination that best suits their individual needs.

Additionally, if your pup isn't used to being around other animals or large crowds of people, try finding an isolated spot where they won't get overwhelmed or scared.

Pack the Necessities

Before heading out on your camping trip, make sure you're well-equipped for both yourself and your pup. Pack plenty of food and water for both of you (plus enough for several extra days just in case) and any medications or supplements your pup takes regularly. Don't forget about items like extra blankets and toys too—these will come in handy for keeping them comfortable during the night! And last but not least, don't forget their leash and collar—these are essential items when taking your pet anywhere!

Be Prepared For Emergencies

It's always important to be prepared for emergencies when bringing pets on outdoor adventures—and this goes double when camping with dogs! Be sure to research nearby veterinarians before leaving so that you know where to go should any illnesses or injuries arise during the trip.

Additionally, creating an emergency plan outlining who will care for your pup if something happens while out in the wild is always wise. This could include making arrangements with family members or friends who live nearby or even having someone from the local animal shelter come to pick up the pup should an emergency arise away from home base.

  • Emergency Veterinary Clinic
  • Visit MyVeterinarian.com, enter the zip code, and check the "emergency" box to get a listing of emergency providers in the area.
  • Animal Poison Control Center

888-4ANI-HELP (888-426-4435)

  • Vaccination Records

Just in case you need to show anyone that your dog's shots are up to date.

Dog Parent Safety Tips

A best practice is to buy a bag of blank dog tags, they're inexpensive to get, and write where you are camping and the site number with a sharpie so if your dog wanders off you can be reunited faster. Make sure that your information is up to date if your dog is microchipped. You also need to be prepared for an emergency so it's a good idea to get a dog first aid kit (you should also get a human one as well).

We like ARCA pet cat and dog first aid kit because it's the most complete kit at an affordable price and it provides a pet first aid handbook, and I will link it below if you want to check it out and see the price.

Medications

PLEASE! Make sure that you give your dog their heartworm, flea, and tick medicine before you get there because Mosquitos are what give your dog heartworms (the treatment for heartworms is very hard on your dog) plus bring your dog's daily medicine with you, and put it in a waterproof case.

Dog-Friendly Layout

It's no surprise that our dogs love comfort as much as we do so make sure there's enough room for you and your family, and when your dogs sleep, they stretch out and relax at night. Keep these dog camping essentials in your mind. Make sure and pack a bed for them as well so you will have a great place to let your dog sleep set up a little area for them to have some comforts from home like your dog toys that are their favorite it provides comfort and give them something to play with.
